Following Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) shock sabotage of the Obamacare repeal vote, several prominent conservatives — and at least one Republican congressman — quickly called for Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mitch McConnell to resign.

“Let’s be clear about what happened in the last 24 hours in the United States Senate — it was an abject failure of the United States Senate to do what America needs doing [sic],” Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Friday morning.

“It was a failure from newest member [Sen.] Luther Strange [R-Ala.] at the bottom to the very top with Mitch McConnell as majority leader, and I hope that the Senate will not quit — I hope and urge the senate to stay in Washington, D.C., until the job gets done,” he continued.

“And if they’re gonna quit, then, by golly, maybe they oughta [sic] start at the top with Mitch McConnell leaving his position and letting somebody new, somebody bold, somebody conservative take the reins, so that they can come up with a plan that can get through the United States Senate,” Brooks said.

“Unquestionably the leadership at the top is responsible,” he told Cuomo. “The buck stops there — that’s why you take on that kind of responsibility. If Mitch McConnell cannot get the job done on this, how is he going to get the job done on the rest of President Trump’s agenda over the next three-and-a-half years? This is a killer.”

“It’s not necessarily anything bad about Mitch McConnell himself personally. But he’s got a job to do, and if he can’t do it then, as ‘The Apprentice’ would say, ‘You’re fired,’ get somebody who can,” said Brooks.

Nationally syndicated conservative radio host Mark Levin was a bit more blunt.

“McCain joins Democrats, McConnell fails again and must go,” he tweeted early Friday.

“Mitch McConnell should resign as Majority Leader by Monday, at the latest,” tweeted Josh Hammer on Thursday night, contributing writer to The Daily Wire and The Resurgent. The tweet had been retweeted over 300 times and “liked” by nearly 900 users by the time of this article’s publication.

The demands for McConnell’s head are not surprising given the spectacular failure of his leadership on the health care issue, explained Eddie Zipperer, an assistant professor for political science at Georgia Military College.

“McConnell fumbled the seven-year promise to repeal and replace Obamacare like it was a buttered pig,” Zipperer told LifeZette.

“His leadership is nonexistent. He started with a bill put together by the Blue Cross/Blue Shield dream team he assembled, and it all went downhill from there,” he said. “McConnell should step aside immediately before he’s allowed to help RINOs and Democrats bail out the insurance companies with a bill that will contain zero repeal.”

“He had seven years and a number of tried to get this right, and he still blew it,” Zipperer continued. “McConnell failed to repeal and replace Obamacare. Now it’s time for Senate Republicans to repeal and replace him.”
