Liberal commentator Chris Matthews fretted President-Elect Donald Trump’s impending  ability to “start a nuclear war” on any whim during an appearance on CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Thursday evening.

Matthews, who hosts MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” rebuked the American people for voting Trump into office on Election Day, saying they should have considered the consequences of their votes. As Colbert and Matthews discussed the impending Trump presidency on the eve of his inauguration, they expressed their disapproval for the people’s willingness to give Trump “the amazing power to destroy this planet.”

“At five minutes after 12 or one minute after 12, if a call comes from a voice that is Donald Trump’s, he can do anything he wants. How’s that for a thought?”

“This is the weird part. This is not funny. There’s a guy, a general at Omaha, Nebraska … who does voice recognition. And if a call comes at five minutes ’til 12 from Barack Obama, he could start a nuclear war. But you know, he hasn’t,” Matthews said. “At five minutes after 12 or one minute after 12, if a call comes from a voice that is Donald Trump’s, he can do anything he wants. How’s that for a thought?”

Colbert responded, “Why did you make me think that?”

“Because it’s something we should’ve thought of when we voted,” Matthews said. “That’s the key moment I’m talking about.”

Neither Matthews nor Colbert deigned to recognize the number of commonsense and economic reasons why American voters chose Trump’s platform and message over those espoused by Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Disastrous trade deals that hurt American workers, weak borders, national security concerns, and more provided much of the impetus needed for the people to reject Clinton’s policies and cast their lot in with Trump’s.

Matthews then brought up the idea of the meeting where Trump will receive the nuclear codes.

“I heard when people of sound mind have come out of those meetings, they’re either crying or thrown away by the amazing power to destroy this planet that’s in the finger of a president of the United States the second that he takes office,” Matthews said. “It’s just too awesome for a normal human being to imagine.”

“That’s why I don’t,” Colbert quipped.

Matthews attempted to justify his concerns, saying, “Trump’s a hard guy to figure, you know? He just is.”

Agreeing with Matthews’ opinion the president-elect would be irresponsible with the power and responsibilities granted to him by the American people, Colbert proceeded to explain what he viewed as “one of the oddest things” about Trump.

“That’s actually one of the oddest things about Donald Trump, is that it’s not like I disagree with him. It’s that I’m not sure where he stands most of the time,” Colbert said. “It’s the mercurial nature of him that you want to know what the guy believes and what he’ll do, but he’s specifically said that he wants to keep people off-balance.”
