Special counsel Robert Mueller should hurry to wrap up the investigation into Russian meddling during the 2016 presidential election, says New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican who went to the mat to help get President Donald Trump elected.

“This is the problem with special prosecutors,” said Christie, a former U.S. prosecutor, on “The Laura Ingraham Show” Friday morning. “They’re given a discrete task. It always expanded beyond the discrete task. They’re always looking to make a charge to justify their existence.”

Mueller was appointed as special counsel in May by the Department of Justice to investigate Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. The investigation has reportedly widened its focus to investigate matters related to Trump and his associates unrelated to Russian meddling in U.S. elections.

“What I would say now is, listen, ‘Wrap it up,'” said Christie, speaking of Mueller and his investigation. “Get to work, get it done. Come to the conclusion … Was there collusion between the Russian government and the Trump campaign in the 2016 presidential campaign?”

Christie said he fears the investigation will expand and take a life of its own, veering off course as U.S. attorneys look to make a name for themselves.

On another front, Christie told Ingraham drug overdoses are killing 175 Americans a day, a number much larger than a terrorist attack.

In a White House speech on Thursday, Trump declared a public health emergency related to heroin and other opioid-type drugs, such as painkillers.

“This is an epidemic that is killing Americans at a rate of a September 11 [terrorist attack] every day,” said Christie.

Christie said top-level diplomatic talks are needed with the Chinese to get them to stop the exporting of a powerful opioid, fentanyl. Trump said on Thursday that he would pressure China’s President Xi Jinping to crack down on Chinese fentanyl manufacturers.

Christie said some of the fault for opioid addiction lies with doctors.

“Our doctors are overprescribing these opioids to an extraordinary step,” said Christie.
