When a man entered a sports bar armed with two loaded guns and two knives, he bit off a lot more than he could chew. The incident occurred in Texas, where an incoherent gunman walked into a sports bar and began yelling.

Witnesses reported that it was unclear at whom the gunman — later identified as 48-year-old James Jones — was yelling. When the manager of the establishment attempted to speak with Jones, he fired and shot him dead. That’s when an unidentified patron and concealed-carry holder sprang into action. He fired his gun at Jones.

Upon being hit, Jones then began to fire at the door. It wasn’t clear what the gunman’s intentions were, but people were trying to escape, so it seems as though Jones wanted to kill more people.

The gentleman who killed Jones is being heralded as a hero, and rightfully so. Law enforcement officials don’t believe the gunman even knew the manager he shot and killed. With that in mind, this incident could have turned out a lot worse. Mass shootings are a very real threat these days, and victims are often blindsided.

This illustrates the importance of the Second Amendment. The gentleman who killed the gunman likely prevented further loss of life. It takes an enormous amount of courage under those circumstances to act in self-defense and defense of fellow citizens. Because of programs like the Texas concealed-handgun license, lives were spared. I’m sure the families of each individual patronizing the sports bar at the time are grateful beyond measure.

With threats coming from practically every corner of society, it’s important for citizens to not only know their rights but exercise them to the fullest extent when possible. Guns are a valuable asset to American citizens with proper training and education on responsible ownership.

There are instances like this where anti-gun activists should ponder whether or not they’d be upset if their lives were saved by a lawful gun owner. Others were injured in the incident due to broken glass while trying to escape, but no other casualties were reported.

I can’t help but wonder how other tragedies could have been handled if more citizens were armed. Although hindsight is 20/20, I truly believe there would be increasingly fewer opportunities for crazed gunmen to partake in killing sprees with the knowledge that guns are permitted on the premises. I’m sure that at this point, many criminals assume there aren’t any concealed-carry individuals in the vicinity. This was a deadly mistake James Jones made that cost him his life.

Sadly, a brave manager was killed as he tried to calm the gunman down. I can’t imagine how grateful the other customers are to have walked away from that scene. Many people treat guns like a device cloaked in pure evil, hand-carried by agents of Satan himself. Though I always say to each his own, perhaps some education and research into incidents like this one will provide a different perspective.
