Some people think it’s cool and hip to say they “live off the grid.” But a new case thumbs its nose at those who truly do live independently and with great dignity — and it’s raising eyebrows for other reasons as well.

Adele and Matt Allen may be the most hippie parents ever. The British couple also have a boatload of nerve: They want complete strangers to fund their far-out lifestyle.

This couple is “irritating” and “oblivious,” says Slate.

Their “natural” form of parenting includes no vaccinations for their two children, no formal education for them, no shoes, a family bed sleeping arrangement, and kids breastfeeding until … well, maybe into their teen years. Who knows?

The Allens refer to themselves online as “The Unconventional Parents” and have gone public with their let-it-all-hang-out lifestyle. They’re hoping to raise over $132,000 through fundmytravel.com to move to Costa Rica and purchase a large plot of land to live on, according to Newser.

They want to live in nature, farm — commune with the trees, the bugs, the land — with no help from anyone. Except that they need our money.

Adele and Matt Allen currently live in England with their children, their five-year-old son Ulysses and their one-year-old daughter Ostara, and are practicing what is known as “off-grid parenting.”

The boy is still breastfeeding.

The children’s placentas and umbilical cords were left to rot and fall off naturally (salt and rose petals attempted to cover the smell), according to US Magazine. And Ulysses has not yet begun to learn to count or spell — his mother reportedly believes he’ll pick it up “naturally” in a few years’ time.

Unfortunately for the Allens, their donations page has brought more scoffing, derision, and concern than actual donations. It’s raised less than $200 so far — with Slate calling the family “irritating” and “oblivious.”

Their donations page reads, in part: “We call our parenting style ‘off-grid’ and some key elements of it are: No rigid bedtimes set — we trust the kids to know when is the best time they want to sleep at.” (Don’t you just love the grammar?)

They also say, “Breast milk is a great supplement, not just for infants — our five-year-old, Ulysses, can decide when he wants to stop breastfeeding. We believe in natural medicine and refuse modern medicine — lemon water if we have a cold and breast milk is our cure for an eye infection!”

One commenter to their donations page is concerned for the Allen children’s welfare on several fronts.

“I’d be amazed if social services doesn’t get involved,” wrote the commenter. “This couple have admitted to crossing the line for child protection plans, in my experience (refusing vaccines is one thing, but leaving them to sweat a serious illness with serious complications is even worse and is neglect), and not clothing or educating them (you are still required to teach certain key subjects which these people are not) …”

Said another poster, this one at Treehugger: “We are tired of hearing about people like the Allens insisting they’ve got something really fabulous going on. Good for them.”

Said one New York mother of two of the Allen family, “I’m all for happy and healthy families. But it is rather ironic that they want other people to fund their ‘self-sufficiency.’ Whatever happened to taking care of yourself, of working hard for what you need? These people are living in a dream world. And in terms of not giving their children any structure, I think they’re setting their kids up for failure in the long run.”

One Boston-area 17-year-old said bluntly, “Poor kids. They’ll never survive school if their parents ever do let them go — life is pretty complicated now for teenagers. And they’re being raised like wolves.”

As the Allen couple says online: “Our ultimate goal is to become self-sufficient. The way of making that happen is by moving to Costa Rica and buying a big plot of land where we can grow food, and have access to wildlife and nature in its natural state.”

Just one problem with that, as their own words indicate: “That’s where we need YOUR help. We would love if you could donate any amount and help us achieve our dreams.”
