It’s a move that has left most parents breathing a sigh of relief.

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump reversed an Obama administration ruling that would have required schools to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of their “chosen gender identity.”

This is a good move for families nationwide, and it’s a relief for those who felt the federal government never should have gotten involved in this issue. It returns power to the states and to local school districts, where it should be, and takes the comfort and health of all children into account — not just those of the LGBT community, who are in the statistical minority.

To put things in perspective, of a total U.S. population of approximately 322 million, there are perhaps a million people identifying as transgender, according to the  American Journal of Public Health. School kids make up less than a quarter of the total population, which means that at best, there are perhaps 200,000 kids who declare themselves to be transgender.

Nevertheless, Reuters described the ruling by then-President Obama as one of his “signature initiatives.” Schools were even put on notice they could either comply with that regulation — or have funding withheld by the federal government.

Forget the horrific murder rates in inner-city Chicago or in other major urban centers. Forget establishing some kind of control over illegal immigration in this country. Forget the stagnant American economy or the daily terror threats posed by ISIS — or any number of other real-world crises that affect many Americans each and every day. No, what the country really needed was a new regulation forcing everyone to go crazy over which bathroom to use. Ridiculous!

As it happened, the regulations had been temporarily halted after Texas and 12 other states sued, and a U.S. district judge in Texas put the breaks on full implementation. Nevertheless, the fact that such regulations had been issued was sufficient to put schools around the nation, and millions of kids, on notice.

The interpretation of the law in question is known as Title IX, which bans sex discrimination in education. However, it has not yet been decided how this will apply to transgender people, if at all. The courts will eventually figure out whether civil rights legislation applies to gender choice.

Not surprisingly, activists on the Left denounced President Trump’s move as hateful, and warned of more street protests. They claimed he had forgotten the LGBT community, that he’d turned his back on them. Rachel Tiven, chief executive of Lambda Legal, an LGBT advocacy group, called the move an “attack on transgender children” and a “new low” for the month-old administration.

What the activists apparently failed to understand was that the new president’s action does not prevent schools from allowing transgender children to use the bathroom of their choice. It simply makes it clear that such a policy is not the business of the federal government to impose on the states.

Parents who remember simpler times — five or 10 years ago, let’s say — may wonder how we even got to this place. How did we get to the point where we have to worry whether our children will be forced to use their school bathroom with children of the opposite sex?

Those on the Left once demanded that the government stay out of the bedroom. Can we not also agree that the government should stay out of the bathroom as well?
