Medical experts — as well as everyday Americans — are wondering what’s going on with Hillary Clinton after coughing fits temporarily sidelined the Democratic hopeful over the weekend. She has had similar coughing issues in the past.

Clinton had to step back from the podium at two events this weekend — in the first, she had a coughing fit in front of a crowd at a rally in Cleveland. The episode started shortly after she was introduced, and went on for several minutes. Even though she took sips of water to try to clear her throat, she was still unable to speak regularly for some time. Clinton finally regained enough of her voice to continue with her prepared statement.

The second happened aboard her new campaign plane in front of reporters.

“There are a lot of things that can cause chronic coughing,” said Dr. Gerard Gianoli, a physician in private practice in Covington, Louisiana, and a faculty member at Tulane University School of Medicine. “The one observation I would make is, whatever is causing Mrs. Clinton’s coughing fits, her doctors have not figured out what it is,” he told LifeZette. “Because if they did, she wouldn’t be having [them].”

Concerns over Hillary Clinton’s health don’t amount to a conspiracy theory, said Dr. Bob Lahita, a top doctor and Rutgers University professor of medicine. Lahita believes Clinton, her running mate, and her Republican opponents should all be assessed by an impartial panel of physicians.

“We owe it to the country, we owe it to the voters, not only for the presidential candidates, but also for the vice-presidential candidates — particularly in this election,” Lahita told Fox News.

While people continue to wonder what specifically is going on with Hillary Clinton, here’s what we do know: She has suffered numerous uncontrollable coughing spells. She has also appeared to have seizure-like episodes, vision problems, and memory issues, and she has struggled at times with her balance. All of this has occurred over the past year or more, as her campaign has tightly managed her time and appearances.

“We do know she had a concussion that she described as severe. And that her husband said [it] took her six months to recover from. This is, by definition, a traumatic brain injury,” Gianoli said. “The issue is not — ‘Did it cause cognitive dysfunction in her case?’ It causes cognitive dysfunction in 100 percent of the cases of people that have this. The question is — ‘What are the long-term consequences? Did she completely recover?’ There are a lot of unanswered questions.”

Clinton also has a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). She takes Coumadin, a blood thinner, to prevent new blood clots. The side effects of these medications are usually dizziness, easy bruising, and some muscle weakness or pain.

It’s unclear whether Clinton began taking Coumadin before or after a fall in 2012. If she was taking the medication all along to prevent symptoms of heart disease, the dizziness could explain repeated falls. If she began taking the medication after her most recent fall, her neurological health could be in question.

“Coumadin increases the risk of internal bleeding and hematomas, but I’ve never heard of Coumadin increasing the risk of falls or loss of balance,” said Dr. David Samadi, chairman of urology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Though he has not examined Clinton, he believes some of her unsteadiness could be a manifestation of post-concussion syndrome, or PCS.

Patients with PCS experience an impaired ability to think, process, and remember things. Other symptoms include mood swings, drooping energy levels, and intellectual dullness. “Her gender and age, which is over 60, put her at risk for this post-concussion,” he said.

“It’s entirely possible Mrs. Clinton is having problems she hasn’t even told her doctor,” said one physician.

Dr. Samadi also cites the instances in which Clinton has misspoken at recent events. She mistakenly said she would raise taxes on the middle class. She accidentally called Donald Trump her “husband.” She says she had a “short-circuit” during an interview.

These instances could be evidence of “neurological issues,” Dr. Samadi said. “Or they could be pure fatigue. Your brain isn’t going to function well on two or three hours of sleep. You can say the wrong things. You add stress, fatigue, lack of exercise — I don’t think she exercises much on the campaign trail — and you add that together, that’s what you’ll have.”

“It’s entirely possible Mrs. Clinton is having problems that she hasn’t even told her doctor. In defense of the doctor that wrote her letter, Mrs. Clinton may say she’s fine and everything is great. Why would you run a bunch of tests for someone like that [who isn’t mentioning any medical problems]?” said Gianoli. “She’s not the most straightforward with information, as we’ve seen in the past.”

“Without her records, we just don’t know,” said Dr. Ramin Oskoui, CEO of Foxhall Cardiology PC in the Washington, D.C., area, and a regular contributor to LifeZette.

“The presidency is one of the most mentally and physically rigorous jobs in the world,” he added. “Any voter should have [the candidates’ health] information. We are more rigorous in assessing the health of our airline pilots and doctors than we seem to be of our presidential candidates.”
