As the clock ticks down on 2015, it’s time to start thinking about your New Year’s resolutions. If you’re like most people, getting and staying in shape will top your list.

It’s an important list for the American College of Sports Medicine as well. Each year, the ACSM surveys health and fitness professionals worldwide to compile its list of trends.

The 2016 survey, in its 10th year, compiled results from over 2,800 professionals.

There’s a difference between a trend and a fad, of course, and the survey’s lead author, Walter R. Thompson, associate dean of graduate studies and research at Georgia State University, says it’s an important distinction.

“Fads are typically short-lived and last only a couple of months. Trends, on the other hand, are proven successes and will be around for a much longer period of time. The industry will make an investment in a trend, but not a fad,” he said.

Here’s a look at some of the top trends that made the 2016 list.
