It’s time for vacations, backyard barbecues, pool parties, and some well-deserved relaxation. These summer months are also filled with lots of temptations, so it may be hard to stay on track with our health goals. But it’s not impossible.

It’s all about balance, and summer is actually the time of the year when we can be more motivated — and have lots of energy to improve our physical and emotional conditions.

These seven insights will help you stay on track.

1.) Water is your best friend. Of course you can enjoy summer cocktails, but during the summer, because of the heat and sweat, you may get dehydrated. So chances are you’ll be tempted to grab whatever cold liquid may be handy, and many are filled with tons of calories that increase your body’s need for water. Also, the lack of water can make you crave food, even if you are not actually hungry.

In order to prevent dehydration and replenish your energy, for every hour you are in the sun you should drink one or two glasses of water. Sure, sometimes we get bored of water … but we can add some healthy flavoring to it such as a piece of fruit; or choose other healthy options as coconut water or green tea.

2.) Give your diet a berry boost. If you’ve decided to improve your diet this summer, include fresh berries. Blackberries, blueberries and strawberries are delicious, cheaper at this time of year, and especially rich in antioxidants that may help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risks of illnesses related to age.

In addition, berries are a great source of fiber, helping to keep cholesterol low. It may also help prevent some types of cancer.

3.) Get a heart-healthy early start. Summer is that time of the year when people usually take time off, relax, and go to bed late. However, there’s a great advantage to waking up early and boosting your day with an energizing walk or workout, indoors or outdoors, when the temperature is not too hot. Then you don’t have to worry about it the rest of the day.

4.) Lower your stress by “grounding.” Putting your hands in soil is “grounding,” and summer is the perfect time of the year to be outdoors and do so.

Gardening helps you stay mentally grounded. It can help you relieve physical and mental stress, and improve your mood. Even more, some research suggests that the physical activity associated with gardening can help lower the risk of developing dementia and help improve depression symptoms.

Gardening is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and even helps burn some calories.

In addition, planting a garden is a great way to have quick access to healthy food for your summer meals, and, if you have kids, get them involved in playing outside.

5.) Take that vacation! If you’ve been putting off time away from work and your regular routines, think it over and take some vacation time, so that you can relax, sleep better, feel healthier and be more productive. (go to page 2 to continue reading) [lz_pagination]
