Most of us are so caught up in the daily grind that we don’t have time — or make the time — to think about bettering ourselves as human beings.

But what we don’t realize is when we better ourselves, we also help everyone around us. Improving ourselves is key to staying mentally, emotionally and spiritually healthy.

It is surprising that we take the time to stay physically fit by going to the gym each day — but how much time and effort do we put into being compassionate?

Here are a few simple and easy ways to be a better person. You’ll be thankful for engaging in these steps, and so will those around you.

1.) Be a good listener. Often all we want to do is talk. But sometimes by listening, you give someone the inner voice she needs to solve issues or reflect on a troubling situation.

Make listening to your friends and family a priority. This is a vital skill to develop that will be a positive change in your life.

And by doing this you will meet fascinating people, learn from them — and build new friendships.

2.) Have a sense of adventure. It is often said that life happens outside of your comfort zone. And in many cases, this is true. It is important to go outside of your regular routine and change things up a little.

You’ll broaden your horizons this way and gain new perspectives. A good way to do this is to travel. You’ll experience different cultures, people and food.

This doesn’t mean you have to go to the other side of the world. You can also visit places closer to home. Or perhaps try something exciting, such as whitewater rafting, snorkeling, or hiking. All of these new experiences will make you see the world around you differently.

3.) Be accepting of change. We’re all creatures of habit. And sometimes change is difficult for us to accept. Change is uncomfortable at first, but if someone expresses the need for you to change, think of it as a way to bring about positive growth.

4.) Volunteer. Giving back to others who are in need is a way to bring you true happiness. Maybe you can volunteer a few hours a week. Organizations are always looking for people to help, and there are so many types of centers that need you.

Try animal welfare issues or homeless shelters.

You can change someone’s life for the better. And in the process, you’ll be helping yourself, too.
