No one knows what happened to Grant Milton, a senior linebacker from The Woodlands High School in Texas.

He was thought to be otherwise healthy before he collapsed on the sidelines during the second half of his high school football playoff game last Saturday — with a possible brain injury. No one saw any direct hit before it happened.

“He was sitting on the bench and suddenly started throwing up. It just happened all of a sudden, and nobody saw anything because he wasn’t on the field, and the game just kept going on,” said classmate Bryn Stephens, as USA Today reported.

Milton underwent surgery for a brain injury that night. He remains hospitalized and in critical condition.

“He is probably not suffering yet, since he is in a medically induced coma,” wrote Grant Farley, one of his best friends, in a special article for texashsfootball.com. “His family and friends are the ones suffering. We know that Grant is lucky to be alive, but he is alive and that is what matters. Did our individual prayers work? Did our prayer gatherings help? Something did — he has survived.”

“What Grant needs are prayers and medical help. I pray he gets plenty of both,” said a classmate and friend.

The outpouring of love and support from teammates, classmates, and the family’s community has been humbling. But Milton’s story has also touched hearts across the nation, through CaringBridge updates and a GoFundMe page established to help the family with unexpected medical costs. The fund, in less than a week, has nearly reached its goal of $121,000.

Houston Texans defensive end, J.J. Watt, is among those offering support for the family.

Watt made a generous gift of $10,000 to the Miltons this week.

“Nobody knows what obstacles Grant will face when he wakes up,” Farley wrote. “He will need help, possibly more than we ever imagined, so we need to be prepared and make sure he gets what we can give. What Grant needs now and in the future are prayers and medical help. I pray that he gets plenty of both.”
