President Donald Trump and the head of the Roman Catholic Church met together Wednesday in Rome.

“Honor of a lifetime to meet His Holiness Pope Francis,” Trump tweeted May 24. “I leave the Vatican more determined than ever to pursue peace in our world.”

The first face-to-face meeting between the two men took place at the Vatican during Trump’s historic nine-day visit through the Middle East and Europe.

The president and the pope had a one-on-one meeting in Francis’ private study for about half an hour.

The discussion focused on “international affairs and the promotion of peace in the world through political negotiation and interreligious dialogue, with particular reference to the situation in the Middle East and the protection of Christian communities,” according to a statement from the Vatican.

“Both men looked far more relaxed at the end of the private meeting, with the pope smiling and joking with Trump and his wife Melania,” Reuters reported from the Vatican City.

The New York Times noted: “Only Roman Catholic queens and princesses are allowed to wear white during a private papal audience, so Mrs. Trump chose a black lace dress and veil over her hair — no word yet on the designer. She also held a rosary, which she asked the pope to bless. He complied.”

Pope Francis and Trump exchanged gifts.

“Francis then gave the president a small sculptured olive tree and told him through the interpreter that it symbolized peace,” Reuters reported. “‘It is my desire that you become an olive tree to construct peace,’ the pope said, speaking in Spanish.”

Pope Francis also gave Trump a copy of his 2017 message on peace and a 2015 letter on the need to protect the environment. Trump, for his choice of gifts, gave books by Martin Luther King Jr. to the pontiff.

“During the cordial discussions, satisfaction was expressed for the good existing bilateral relations between the Holy See and the United States of America, as well as the joint commitment in favor of life, and freedom of worship and conscience,” a statement from the Vatican noted. “It is hoped that there may be serene collaboration between the state and the Catholic Church in the United States, engaged in service to the people in the fields of health care, education, and assistance to immigrants.”

The meeting was “fantastic,” according to Trump.
