In June, residents of Scalise’s hometown of Metairie, Louisiana, held a special prayer service the evening of the shooting at the congressman’s church, St. Catherine of Siena. Other churches in Alexandria held prayer services as well. Louisiana lawmakers and the state’s governor held a prayer vigil that day at the Capitol building in Baton Rouge.

“We pray for more peace in our country and an end to this senseless violence,” Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said that day. “I would ask that we join together in prayer for Steve and his speedy recovery.”

After a bullet from the gunman’s rifle entered Scalise’s left hip on June 14, “the bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding,” MedStar Washington Hospital stated the day of the shooting. Scalise had immediate surgery to stop the bleeding; additional procedures and operations followed. He had blood transfusions, surgery for internal injuries, work on a broken bone in his leg, and surgeries for infection management.

“On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday’s events,” Jennifer Scalise, the congressman’s wife, said on June 16. “Our family asks that you continue to pray for Steve, Matt Mika, Zach Barth, and all of those hurt in this attack, and keep them in your thoughts as they face recovery.”

The hospital has provided updates on Scalise’s condition over the past six weeks.
