Americans from coast to coast look forward to the Super Bowl every year for more than just football — it’s also about the commercials. One of the most famous Super Bowl dynasties is the Budweiser Clydesdale commercials.

These beautiful and iconic horses also are doing a great deal of good for a small town in Boonville, Missouri: They’re saving the economy.

Warm Springs Ranch, right outside Boonville, is the exclusive breeding farm for the famous Clydesdales.

Early in the 19th century, farmers living along the banks of the River Clyde in Lanarkshire, Scotland, imported a few of their Great Flemish Horses and mated them with local mares. This was the birth of the Clydesdale, according to the Warm Springs Ranch.

“In order to join the world-famous Budweiser hitch, a Clydesdale must meet certain requirements,” the ranch explains on its website. “They must stand at least 18 hands high (or 6 feet tall). They must be geldings and at least 4 years old. They must have a bay coat, four white stockings, a blaze of white on the face, a black mane and a black tail. And they must weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds.”

John Soto, supervisor of the ranch, who has been with Anheuser-Busch for 37 years — and has been running the ranch in this location since it opened in 2007. The ranch receives visitors from all over the world, from as far away as Tasmania and Australia, Soto told ABC News.

For the town of Boonville, the Clydesdale ranch is a godsend.

The town’s mayor, Julie Thacher, says that while the ranch is outside the city limits, it’s still contributing to the economy. Many  tourists stay the night.

“If they’re spending the night here,” Thacher said, “they’re probably going to be eating here. They may be going to Wal-Mart to pick up a few things they might need.”

She added, “Boonville’s always been an interesting town, but we never really had a hook to catch people and bring them into town.”

The large factories that for so long stimulated the economy had moved out of the area — so it suffered. The Warm Springs Ranch and the Isle of Capri Casino, which recently moved in, have offered much-needed boosts.

The ranch offers tours of the property twice a day every day, except for Wednesday. It also offers private tours. The ranch opens for the season close to the Clydesdales’ birthing time, so visitors can see the beautiful new foals.

When it comes to Clydesdales, the commercials always impress. Take a look at some of our favorites.
