Vice President Mike Pence emphasized the current administration’s commitment to protecting unborn babies while speaking Tuesday morning at the annual National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C.

“President Donald Trump stands with the men and women who stand for the sanctity of human life in American, and he always will,” Pence said at the prayer breakfast.

Each year since 2004, over 1,000 influential Catholics have gathered in the nation’s capital city to pray for the country.

“Since day one of this administration, President Donald Trump has been keeping his promise to stand for life,” Pence told the crowd. “And life is winning in America again. In one of his very first acts in Congress, President Trump reinstated the Mexico City policy to prevent taxpayer funding from organizations that perform or promote abortion abroad.”

Earlier this year, Pence, the former governor of Indiana, spoke at the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. Trump is committed to standing for pro-life values, Pence noted.

“The president has actually empowered states to withhold federal funding from abortion providers,” Pence said Tuesday. “And I’m humbled to say that at the president’s direction, I had the privilege of casting the tie-breaking vote in the United States Senate that allows states to defund Planned Parenthood.”

Conservative lawmakers and the current administration have pushed to eliminate taxpayer dollars that go toward recipients such as the abortion giant Planned Parenthood. As listed in the organization’s most recent annual report, Planned Parenthood affiliates received over $550 million dollars in federal health services, reimbursements, and grants.

“Vice President Pence is a man of deep religious faith and a steadfast leader on many of the issues that Catholics care deeply about, including preserving religious freedom, building a culture of life, and caring for the most vulnerable among us,” Joseph Cella, founder of the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, said in a prepared statement.

Pence, who grew up Catholic but is now an evangelical Christian, encouraged the crowd to pray for the nation.

“Your faith has moved mountains,” Pence told the Catholics in attendance at the prayer breakfast at the Marriott Marquis in Washington.

Pence said he grew up with “a front-row seat to the Catholic faith.”

“The hymns and liturgies of the Catholic Church are the anthems of my youth,” Pence said Tuesday. “The Bible says train up a child in the way he should go and when he’s old he will not depart from it … My Catholic faith poured an eternal foundation in my life.”
