An eerie silence hung over Israel on Monday as people stood still for two minutes of silence to remember the six million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust.

Sirens wailed as the Israeli people stopped their daily activities during the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day.

“The annual remembrance is one of the most solemn days on Israel’s calendar,” as the Associated Press reported. “Restaurants, cafés, and places of entertainment shut down, and radio and TV programs are dedicated almost exclusively to documentaries about the Holocaust, interviews with survivors and somber music. The Israeli flag flew at half-staff.”
