Those who might still question the faith, sincerity, and dedication of President Donald Trump should listen to his speech from the National Prayer Breakfast Thursday morning.

At the 65th National Prayer Breakfast, which is an annual event dating back to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Trump began his remarks by thanking and praising Vice President Mike Pence and saying that on a scale of 0-10 — Pence is a 12.

“Your faith and prayers have sustained me and inspired me through some very, very tough times.”

Trump then began a moving address to those in attendance, as well as to the American people. He thanked all Americans, saying: “Your faith and prayers have sustained me and inspired me through some very, very tough times.”

He explained he was strengthened every time he heard these five words from people across the country: “I am praying for you.”

The president thanked members of the U.S. military and their families and quoted John 15:13 — “Greater love hath no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” — as a testimony to their patriotism. He acknowledged that the security of the American people has been bought with the blood, sweat, and tears of their soldiers.

Trump went on to explain that America is a nation of believers, but that the quality of life is not defined by material success. Rather, it’s defined by spiritual success. Faith is more valuable than money.

Trump testified to his own faith at one point in the speech when he said he was blessed to have been raised in “a churched home.” He also said his family taught him that to whom much is given, much is expected. Trump said that people are more than “flesh and bones and blood” — they are human beings, and they have souls.

He recalled Thomas Jefferson’s words, “The God who gave us life, also gave us liberty,” and added that freedom is not a gift from government but from God. He reassured those listening that he would defend freedom of religion in this country and protect the American people. He promised physical security as well as spiritual security. He also said, in light of the recent immigration ban, that America wants people who love American values.

Trump said elected leaders in Washington, D.C., “must never stop asking God for the wisdom to serve the public according to His will.” He also said: “Freedom is not a gift from government, but freedom is a gift from God.”
