When Jordan Smith stepped on stage Monday night as a Top 12 finalist on “The Voice,” the audience was blown away by his performance — and the American public by his song choice.

In an emotional, raw and stunning moment on the show, the contestant chose the hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness.”

Smith, who is on a team coached by Maroon 5 frontman Adam Lavigne, has a long history with hymns and church music. Throughout his life, he has used his amazing gift on Sunday mornings singing for his Kentucky church, and his practice has certainly paid off.

Lavigne chose to forgo all the lights, choreography, and fanfare that usually accompany these reality music show performances. He sent Smith out with just a piano, a microphone and one single spotlight.

The result was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Today, Smith’s cover of the song is No. 1 on iTunes.
