Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) spoke out on Monday to blast police officers who are against her city’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, claiming that they are trying to “induce an insurrection” by “spreading misinformation.”

When asked the Fraternal Order Of Police union refusing to endorse Chicago’s vaccine mandate, Lightfoot said, “What we’ve seen from the Fraternal Order of Police, in particularly leadership, is a lot of misinformation, a lot of half-truths, and, frankly, flat out lies in order to induce an insurrection. And we’re not having that.”

“And so we want to make it very, very clear that the law is on our side. We feel very confident about it,” she added. “And what we said even after when I heard that he said, even after the lawsuit was filed, we notified them, is urging members of the department to ignore their chain of command.”Lightfoot went on to specifically attack Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara, who has been urging officers to defy the vaccine mandate.

“Urging members of the department to ignore the chain of command?” Lightfoot said. “Let me be clear, [Fraternal Order of Police President] John Catanzara has destroyed his police career. Destroyed it. He is not fit. And he is never going to go back in any kind of active position. I don’t want him to lead these young officers astray and have them destroy their careers like he has destroyed his.”

Lightfoot has effectively been at “war” with Catanzara and the police union over the past few days. Last week, Catanzara specifically encouraged officers to file exemptions to receiving the vaccine but not to enter any information into the vaccine portal that is mandated by the city,

“Do not fill out the portal information,” Catanzara told union members in a video that he posted to social media last Tuesday. “I’ve made my status very clear as far as the vaccine, but I do not believe the city has the authority to mandate that to anybody, let alone that information about your medical history.”

Lightfoot fired back by telling Catanzara to “bring it.”

“We’ll see what happens,” she added. “You know, John Catanzara says a lot of things, and a lot of it offensive and racist and foolish, but we’ll see what happens. We’ll be prepared for any eventuality.”

It remains to be seen how this will all play out, and we will update you further as this story develops.
